Mandala Namaskar – Beautifully practised last night -  heightened awareness to circles spirals and circular movement.  We also discussed our proposed charity event this year to be ………..a group chanting of 108 oms, definately less of a physical challenge than last years namaskars however a very spiritual experience not often available in a group form so hope many of you will participate.   Date still to be advised (usually the last Monday before summer class).  Why 108 ? (thank you Eve for asking)   Here are just a few of the reasons 108 is a sacred number :

9 times 12: These numbers have spiritual significance. 9 times 12 is 108. Also, 1 plus 8 = 9

Sanskrit alphabet: 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 =108.

Marmas: are energy intersections. There are said to be 108 marmas in the subtle body.

Astrology: 12 constellations, and 9 arc segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 times 12 equals 108. Chandra is moon, and kalas are the divisions within a whole.

1, 0, and 8:  1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual  and 8 stands for infinity or eternity.

Sun and Earth: The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun.

Moon and Earth: The  Moon’s distance from the Earth is approx. 108 times the diameter of the Moon.

Silver and the moon:  Metal silver is said to represent the moon. The atomic weight of silver is 108.

Smaller divisions:  108 is divided, in half, third, quarter, or twelfth, so that some malas have 54, 36, 27, or 9 beads.

Dance: There are 108 forms of dance in the Indian traditions.

First man in space: The first manned space flight lasted 108 minutes.  It was  April 12, 1961 by Yuri Gagarin, a Soviat

Full moon again and time for deep,  inward reflection.

Chakra balancing last night teamed up well with the culmination of a full moon.  It gave us the opportunity to release the thoughts , emotions and past experiences that we hoard in each chakra.  We keep the positive qualities  promoting a healthy mind, body and soul and we release the negative patterns of thinking and feeling and  let go of stored memories of bad times.

The chakras are always being balanced in yoga practice but s-l-o-w-l-y  in the back ground.  Last night we brought them to the forefront and the asana served the chakra.

With visulisation , simple pranayama, mantra, mudra and asana we gave our emotional bodies a thorough work out.

Should things come to the surface this week yogis no matter how big or small try to face them with courage instead of pushing them back down to be stored once again within your spinning chakras.  You will feel lighter and more positive the more you can clear out!!!  Be observant.  Namaste.  Linda

Walking the way nature intended isn’t as easy as it seems that is if you truly want to nurture your body with every step.    In class we previously checked out our diaphragmatic breath, posture, the feet,  the gait, the swing and the arms such important factors in our walk and  finally we checked out The phsoas.  We might just be walking “So as our phsoas!!! ”

This bio intelligent muscle (according to the work of Liz Kosch) is a messenger from our central nervous system telling us about current or past states of alarm/traumas.   Our fast paced and full lives keep us highly stressed and this muscle remains constantly on the alert becoming tense, short and  dry assisting  in the mal function of our daily stride, low back pain, sacroiliac pain, hip pain, knee/ankle pain .

Palpating the phsoas is only a short term release and could cause further harm.  These long muscles gracing either side of our body and  intertwining from T12 to L5  are the only muscles joining our legs to our  body.  They respond best to a gentle, progressive approach.

First relax them in constructive rest allowing time to sink and let go. Focussing on the breath while waiting will enable the sympathetic NS (fight or flight) to switch off and the parasympathetic NS to switch on (relaxation)  .  Roll a moment into fetal position a natural protective and instinctive position  often stimulated by the phsoas itself when the only choice is to freeze or protect. Try next a passive and gentle pendulum stretch assisted by gravity this will effortlessly bring great results. Knee to chest lying on the floor or standing thus building up to runner lunge keeping your body upright and side bending at the same time. All of these will help to release the grip and gently bring back the suppleness to these very important, responsive and feeling muscles. Good luck with your journey into the phsoas!
